Shelters Program: A Beacon of Hope for Vulnerable Individuals

The shelter department at Harbour Light plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable individuals in the Downtown Eastside community. We operate three year-round 24-hour shelters—Beacon, Haven, and Crosswalk– that can accommodate up to 136 people on a nightly basis. Clients are provided with 3 meals a day, have access to laundry services, a computer lab, dedicated caseworker support and pop-up health clinics. Additionally, there is a seasonal overnight shelter called the Anchor of Hope, available during the cold, wet winter months that can accommodate up to 40 clients.

Our team consists of shelter support workers, shelter coordinators, chaplains, caseworkers, janitorial staff, and kitchen staff, all working together to make the Harbour Light shelters a comfortable and welcoming place for everyone.

We have successfully worked together to transition many individuals from addiction and homelessness to stable lives, and have helped house numerous refugees. Many team members, drawing from their own lived experiences, find deep meaning in assisting others to overcome their struggles, whether related to addiction, homelessness, or the challenges faced by newly arrived refugees.

One of our most recent challenges and successes was overcoming the barriers associated with the influx of refugees to our community. Most of whom spoke limited English. Many of these individuals learned about our services upon arriving in Canada because our shelters are well known for supporting a wide range of vulnerable individuals in a caring, safe, and clean environment. The team adapted exceptionally well, providing invaluable assistance to help clients start their new lives in Canada. Regardless of the types of need, for those who are homeless, our team does an excellent job assisting individuals into more permanent housing. In fact, over the first seven months of this year, we have successfully housed over 200 clients!

Yes, we are a shelter department, but I see us as much more than that. We are on the front lines, providing a safe refuge and a beacon of hope for everyone who walks through our doors. No matter the life circumstances that may bring you here, you’ll find a place of safety and renewed hope with us. If you or anyone you know may need our services, please feel free to reach out. We are here for our community.
