Empowering Recovery and Growth: The Impact of Vancouver Harbour Light Learning Centre

The Vancouver Harbour Light Learning Centre is a dedicated educational space exclusively for Harbour Light residents, offering a range of programs that support personal growth and recovery. Our services include adult basic education, literacy programs, career development, life skills training, and work readiness initiatives. We also foster creativity, critical thinking, and community engagement through unique activities like the Book Club and Documentary Club. Additionally, we provide specialized training, such as the Peer Support Worker class, equipping residents with valuable skills for their future.

Our clients often face challenges related to addiction, homelessness, and trauma. Many carry difficult or negative experiences with education, so we strive to provide a supportive, encouraging environment where they can rebuild their lives through education and skills. The Learning Centre’s focus on personal development complements Harbour Light’s other programs by empowering residents to gain greater independence and self-sufficiency.

Our dedicated volunteers find profound meaning in witnessing the transformation of clients. By embodying The Salvation Army’s core values—hope, service, dignity, and stewardship—we guide residents on their educational journeys, celebrate their achievements, and maximize impact through effective resource management.

Currently, we face challenges, particularly with limited resources. Community support through donations of up-to-date computers, online education resources, or skilled volunteer time to lead workshops would greatly enhance our services.

Looking ahead to our new building, we aim to expand our offerings to include more vocational training and certifications, preparing residents with skills needed in today’s job market. Our vision is to continue fostering resilience, hope, and independence within the entire Harbour Light community, supporting treatment, CSC, and shelter clients alike.
